Driving up to the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium on route 58, maybe 10 minutes after the magnificent burger place Captain Kangaroo, there is a funny looking rock formation to your left, which as getting closer resembles the head of a gorilla and its chopping hand. Congratulations, you have arrived at a popular shore diving spot in Okinawa, Gorilla Chop. One of the best reasons to visit this particular scuba dive site is that during all seasons it is a fairly accessible and easygoing dive.
Gorilla Chop is a great shore dive destination thanks to the accessibility of the location with easy and convenient access to surrounding shops and showers. The visibility in the crystal clear water surrounding this rock formation is also typically superb, you can often easily see for 20 meters or more. Gather up some friends who are also scuba diving in Okinawa to put a dive group together to visit this site. Some people also find this an easy site for snorkeling as well. The depths here are never more than approximately 12 meters / 39 feet, making this an excellent beginner dive spot.
Peaceful. When all the other dive sites are off limits and the boats can not leave the port due to the high winds, Gorilla Chop still offers calm seas, clear waters and diverse marine life. There is also plenty to see under the water here.
Its shallow waters (1-12m) giving you the perfect opportunity for a relaxed dive from the beach. Sea horses, anemone fish and cloud of sardine can be often seen here, offering a great dive for beginners and experienced divers. Due to the perfect conditions, we like to offer this dive site for our first time divers , but often conduct our diving courses and fun dives here.

At Gorilla Chop the starting time can be between 09:00 up to 13:00, giving you the freedom to choose the most suitable time for you.
Do you experience sea sickness? Then an over the counter medication from the local drugstore called Drugstore Mori is highly recommended. No one wants to feed the fish on their dive in the ocean.
Other than that, your average beach going toolkit will be perfect. Water, towel, sun cream and swimwear.
