Heading towards the most Northern point of Okinawa, after leaving Nago and the last convenient store behind, lies Cape Hedo or as the Okinawan people call it, Hedo Misaki. Arriving at the gracious cliffs after the scenic drive up on the West coast and stretching our muscles while looking down the blue ocean worth every second of the journey.
At the end of the road stands the monument, which was erected for commemorating the end of US Occupation and return of Okinawa to Japanese sovereignty in 1972.
The underwater geology of Hedo Misaki is very simple. Starting from the cliffs, a steep slope is running towards the deep ocean and disappearing into the blue waters and the mixture of the strong currents and deep fresh waters are providing the necessary nutrition for a very diverse sea life. Between 5-15 meter, the constantly moving ocean has created massive crevasses and arches, providing hideaways for many fish species.
Around 20m, human sized corals filtering the water, while at 30m Giant Travelly is hunting in the shadows, looking for its prey.
Please keep in mind that all our dives at Cape Hedo are drift dives! If you feel that you don’t have the necessary experience for this dive site please let us know well ahead of time, so we can arrange either some extra training dives, or recommend a different dive site in Okinawa that is more suitable for you.
But the main attraction is the Hedo Dome! This massive air pocket cave is inside the cliff, only accessible from under the water, making it probably the most challenging dive in Okinawa. Inside the dome, where you can come up to the surface, the salt and freshwater is creating a unique mix of thermocline and giant stalactites are hanging from the ceiling of this limestone cave. A limestone cave is a natural underground structure formed from the gradual dissolving and re-precipitation of limestone rock. Over time, water containing dissolved calcium carbonate seeps into cracks in the limestone and gradually dissolves the rock, creating a network of underground passages and chambers. These caves can be filled with various features such as stalactites (hanging down from the ceiling), stalagmites (growing upward from the floor), and flowstones (smooth and shiny rock formations).

Please keep in mind, that since all our dives at Cape Hedo are drift dives, we can accommodate only well experienced divers for this trip.
